Some simple steps to securing your wireless internet connection.
I recently had a friend call me and tell me they are implementing a wireless network at her job. My first question was, “WHY?†Honestly, I am from the frame of mind that wireless doesn’t have as much of a need at an office as some people might think. There are exceptions, but the more you can keep your network wired at the office, the better. There are some huge security issues to consider when going wireless, hence the purpose of this blog.
So, if you decide you do need to go wireless at your office or at home, there are some very simple and basic security tips you should be aware of and try to follow. First, have a complete understanding of what you are doing with your data. With most default wireless installs, especially those designed for SOHOs (small office / home office), there is no security enabled. Meaning you are sending your data through the air, unencrypted, for anyone to pluck out of the sky and look at. Not only that but you are leaving a huge barn door open for people to get onto your network, poke around, and use your internet connection. All this is bad, and even worse if you are a place of business.
